Curling... when you can tell your lady that she is wide without fear of getting whacked upside the head with a cast-iron pan. Or proclaim out loud that she is too heavy, knowing that your comment has been heard by countless bystanders. For in curling, you are the king of the house! - Author Unknown

Welcome from Dunrobin - just outside Ottawa - Canada's capital!

It is said that there are only two seasons in Canada - fifty weeks of winter and a couple of weeks of poor curling.

The club

We're a fun club, you won't find us getting too serious! We number around 20 members, mostly retired guys. We play every Wednesday, as well as other odd times when weather permits. Tuesday is ladies curling, and Sundays are mixed curling, when members are invited to bring guests along. Games are informal, and teams are randomly chosen each game. The club is funded by a small membership fee, and hosts a charity pancake breakfast every spring, with donations to cancer research.

The instigator

This is Ken Bowes, who started outdoor curling in 2001, by flooding an area on his property fed by a natural stream. The first rink had a "dog-leg" in it and rudimentary lines; the rocks were ice-filled kitty-litter containers! Ken has now sold the property and moved into town, so we had to find a new location. Club member Gerard volunteered his property and we have built a new clubhouse and rink there. See the attached links and video for more information.

The rink

Being dependant on weather, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad - but it's always fun. The new rink is great, as it's built on levelled ground, and is flooded on top of a plastic liner. We use half-weight rocks, the granite ones being too heavy for the ice conditions.

If you're in the neighbourhood, please drop by. We'd love to see you!

We entered a local contest to find the area's best outdoor rink. Of course, most were for hockey. Click this sentence to see CTV's coverage of our entry.
